The Kit Carson Trail is a walking path through Carson City’s residential homes district.

A painted blue line and bronze medallions along the sidewalk mark the route, which features stops at landmarks, including 1800s-era Victorian-style homes, museums and churches. More than 60 landmarks are featured along the trail.

The two-mile loop around Spooner Lake lets you enjoy marvelous meadows, abundant aspens, and wonderful wildflowers while strengthening muscles and burning calories. This unique trail has interpretive displays placed along the way, which are great descriptive and educational tools. Should you want to step up your exercise, you’ll discover that Spooner Lake is an ideal starting point for other hiking experiences. It is a major trail head that leads to Marlette Lake, the world famous Lake Tahoe Flume Trail, and the Tahoe Rim Trail (www.tahoerimtrail.org).

Snacks for the Trail

Try either of these tasty snacks for a power boost the next time you’re out and about.

ENERGY BARS RECIPE:

2 tbsp. butter
2 cups miniature marshmallows or 20 large marshmallows, snipped
2 tbsp. peanut butter
4 cups high-protein cereal

TRAIL MIX RECIPE:

8 oz. chopped dates
16 oz. peanuts (salted okay, but avoid dry roast)
8 oz. sunflower seeds
5 oz. pecan halves
6 oz. milk chocolate pieces
6 oz. peanut butter pieces
15 oz. raisins

ENERGY BARS METHOD:
In a heavy skillet, melt butter. Add marshmallows; heat and stir until mixture is melted and syrupy. Remove from heat; stir in peanut butter. Add cereal and mix until coated. Press into an 8″x8″x2″ square on a sheet of heavy foil. Cool until firm enough to cut into 2″x1″ bars. Makes 32. TRAIL MIX METHOD:
Mix all together. May substitute pieces with M&M’s.
